Keeping the
Tradition Alive

eliot coutts, owner & founder

After years of learning the art of hand-nail shingling from my father, I spent decades working for some of the most respected shinglers on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Learning the proper way to flash a roof and mastering the art of thinking like water, I absorbed every trick and trade secret that my mentors would share.

In 2016, and with great respect from mentor and former employer Jim Airasian, I set off on my own to start Hatchet & Hammer Shingle Company. Since then I have had the pleasure of working Martha’s Vineyard’s top contractors, while keeping the same passion to keep the tradition of hand-nailed shingling alive.
